Jo shivered in her light dress. There was something in the air. She could feel it the moment they landed. Glancing pleadingly at the Doctor Jo saw that look in his eyes. He was curious. He wasn't going to leave until he figured it all out.
Sighing out, Jo decided she needed to make the most of it. Perhaps she could help this girl?
Listening Jo memorized her information. Arielle was 11 years old. So young! Jo smiled at the girl kindly and listened to the Doctor. He had asked her to take them to town. Walking beside the Doctor Jo studied Arielle.
What was wrong here? Something was wrong, though Jo couldn't put her finger on it. Arielle was right though. There was something about the air. Something very, very wrong.
"Like the Doc- er Detective John Smith said, we were not told the details. Can you please explain to us what has happened here Arielle? And could you start from the beginning?" A kind smile crossed Jo's face.

Well, if the police needed help, then Arielle was just going to have to help them! Besides, everyone else would probably be too scared to talk to them. She hadn't been here that long (or had she always been here?) and even Arielle had noticed that it was the people who talked to the news or the police the most that ended up being the next victims.
"I can show you around!" She smiled brightly, reaching for Detective Smith and Detective Grant's hands before tugging them forward a little bit.
"We're really close to downtown right now. Makes sense, I guess. Closest to the police station and all."
"Like the Doc- er Detective John Smith said, we were not told the details. Can you please explain to us what has happened here Arielle? And could you start from the beginning?"
Having let go of their hands by now, Arielle bit her lip briefly before answering Jo's question.
"Well, I don't think we're supposed ta say," she began, looking carefully at the two before continuing seemingly assured. "But I think it's because of all the sushides. Suicides? The deaths."

Thankfully the little girl didn't notice Jo's minor slip-up with her words, but the Doctor did wish she would be more careful. Hopefully they'd be able to keep their cover for as long as they needed. And if it came to a point where they'd have to break it, then hopefully it would be at an appropriate time.
And then this girl, Arielle, said a word that caused the Doctor's step to falter for a brief moment. Suicides. Plural. And from the way she mentioned them, he guessed that it was a lot. So something sinister was happening here.
Well, parallel world or not, it was a good thing he and Jo showed up when he did. Though he wished that the TARDIS could've somehow crashed at an earlier point in time in order to prevent them from happening at all. Still, they were here now, and the Doctor would do what he could to help.
"How many suicides?" he asked. "Or do you know? A rough guess, at least." And she wasn't sure if she was supposed to say. A town with secrets. This was shaping up to be very interesting.

Jo followed the girl, having her hand tugged by the girl. Jo liked her, she seemed bright and helpful. And thankfully, she didn't catch her slip-up. So for right now the Doctor and hers secret was safe. Arielle started leading them towards the downtown and Jo kept a sharp eye out.
Then she said what was the problem. Jo's face drained of color and became serious. Suicides? Arielle had said suicides. That meant more than one. Some of Jo's color returned to her face as she turned towards the girl.
Why so many? It couldn't be just a coincidence could it? Or could they all be foul play? Jo felt sick, thinking about how many suicides there had been.
The Doctor asked how many and Jo kept quiet as she let Arielle answer. There had to be a reason for them. Jo shivered in the cool air as she thought about the deaths. Something was wrong here.

Oh, dear. They hadn't been told, had they? What a strange manner of sending in help. These two detective people seemed nice enough, but Arielle could not help but think that whoever had been responsible for calling them here really ought to have given them a bit more information than 'sort out the problem'.
Of course, they COULD just be playing dumb and verifying facts, she supposed. The concept did not seem entirely foreign. What was it... a blind?
Shrugging, Arielle let that thought go. 'Doc-er Detective John Smith' and Miss Grant were looking at her very seriously and Arielle thought she should rather answer.
Exact numbers, however, had her feeling rather uneasy.
"Quite a lot, sir. There's been entire families lost. That's what we think happened to my parents, you know."
It bothered Arielle occasionally that she did not know what had happened. Obviously, she had been created somehow, and one would assume that meant she had parents. But in a town like this? Missing people were hardly rare.
Well, living missing people might be.
"Hazarding a guess," Arielle announced, suddenly professional. "About twelve a year for the past five?"

"Twelve every year in the past five..." the Doctor muttered to himself. "So sixty suicides." This wasn't good. Why did all these people kill themselves? What could possibly drive them all? Whether it was for the same reason or different ones, the number was still extremely high. And suspicious.
Then for some reason, what Arielle mentioned about her parents caught his attention, and he acted on it. "Oh...I'm sorry to hear that," he said, giving the child a small, sad smile. "But...what do you mean, you think that's what happened to your parents?" he asked. "Wouldn't the authorities know? Someone must. They'd hardly disappear for no reason."
What was going on? He was itching to find out. The chill in the air seemed to grow colder, and the Time Lord drew his cape around him. Looking over at Jo, he saw that she was as disturbed as he was. He flashed her a reassuring smile before looking back ahead. "We need to talk to whoever's in charge." With any luck, that person would have some answeres, whoever they were. What the Doctor was hoping for most of all was that the situation didn't get any worse.

Jo missed a step at Arielle's answer. Twelve every year in the past five years? That was sixty suicides! She felt sick.
Sixty people had taken their lives in this tiny town.
Yes Jo felt sick as she tried not imagine the ways that they had ended their lives.
The Doctor managed to keep talking as he tried to gather more information from Arielle. Jo shivered and picked up her speed so as not to stray too far from the Doctor. She stuck to his side like glue. In this place, which set her on edge, Jo did not want to leave the Doctor's side.
Jo rubbed her bare arms. Oh how she wished she had worn a coat! But she had no idea they were going to land here. Jo's small roaring 20's dress did not block out the cold well. She did not like it here! It gave Jo the chills!
Out of the corner of her eye Jo saw the Doctor smile at her. Giving the Doctor a tiny smile Jo tried to tell the Doctor she was alright. They would solve this, she knew they would.
Jo turned towards Arielle. "I'm sorry to hear about your parents Arielle. I promise you we will solve this." The Doctor asked about leading them to whoever was in charge and Jo nodded. Smiling down at the girl, Jo hoped to put the girl at ease so she would help them.
