The Doctor had quickly come to the same conclusion that Emilie had: this had to be a trap. The Sea Devil would not have run away so suddenly if it was anything else. But it was a risk that they were going to have to take. Jamie and Zoe were out there somewhere in the heart of danger as well.
He looked down at the ground as soon as Emilie told him--well, the other him--to look. The Doctor let out an involuntary chuckle. "Sometimes we miss the most obvious things, don't we?" That question was directed, of course, at his older self. It was so easy to get caught up in trying to make connections that weren't so obvious that the obvious things slipped through the cracks.
The Doctor began to follow the footprints. They led deeper into the heart of the city, which probably meant they were going deeper and deeper into the heart of the trap but it was another risk they had to take. The Doctor cupped his hands over his mouth. "Jamie! Zoe!" be called out loud first in one direction and then in another.
If this was indeed a trap, then those Sea Devils would hear him just as clearly as Jamie and Zoe but he was impatient to find his friends and, even if he, his older self, and Emilie remained as quiet as mice, the trap would still eventually be sprung on them anyways.

The Eleventh understood the worry of his younger self. Jaime and Zoe were precious friends, he supposed that at his age, even back then, they were like family, two young ones he cared for deeply, looked after as he showed them the universe.
Of course, as he was now, most of his companions looked at him as a close friend, simply because he appeared to be around their age. He wondered sometimes, if he should aim to go a bit older with the next regeneration. Shaking it off, The Doctor grinned as Emilie pointed out tracks. He looked up to his younger self and said, "I told you Emilie was good at this sort of thing. Sharp as a tack."
However, his younger self was understandably more preoccupied with finding Jaime and Zoe. Calling out so loudly was the only option besides the tediousness of turning up every stone. If they were in trap, it'd be sprung regardless. ___________________
Jaime nodded to Zoe, who'd just made her desire to have The Doctor closer known, "Aye. We prolly shouldn'ta wandered off on our own ahgain." The young Highlander shook it off and continued, "No time ta whine abou' it now, I betcha if we get out in tha open, we'll be able ta find tha Doctor easier."
It made sense in his head at least, Jamie was sure of it, especially when they heard a loud voice. It was muffled, but Jaime was sure that whatever was said had been English, unaware that the TARDIS translated languages wherever they went into something they could understand.
"There we are Zoe. Tha's gotta be The Doctor now." He nodded, sure of himself, "Let's go and find 'em, ya?"

"Well, alright then," Zoe agreed, following Jaime out of their hiding spot towards the Doctor's voice. Fortunately, she was able to calculate the most likely spot for his voice to be coming from, although she had to account a bit for wind and the buildings.
"We're over here!" she called out, assuming everything must be fine if the Doctor was calling them to begin with.
It didn't take long to find him, skidding to a halt with a, "It's so good to see you." Her tone immediately took a light, curious tone as she added, "Oh. Who are they?"
---------------------------------------------
Emilie had shot the younger Doctor a warm smile when his companions had returned his call. They were alive, and hale enough to shout, that had to be a good sign. Well, her Doctor probably knew he hadn't lost them here anyway, but it was still nice to have some sort of confirmation, however intangible.
The concern on his face was touching, and Emilie wondered if she worried the Doctor so much when she ended up taking her own little detours. Probably. He was such a kind man, and he knew the dangers of the universe so very well. Feeling a moment of guilt, Emilie stepped back closer to him, keeping a wary eye to the buildings and ground beneath them. The city was still very much a mystery, and a dangerous one at that.

The Doctor couldn't help but smile as he heard Zoe's voice. He quickened his pace, although he knew that she would be able to guide herself and Jamie the right way because she was a very intelligent young lady, even if logic wasn't something that could always be relied on.
Soon enough his two companions were in sight. The Doctor clapped his hands together in delight. "It's wonderful to see you two as well!" There was no hiding the joy and relief in his voice. "But you really must listen to me when I tell you not to wander off like that again." Admonishing them never worked but it didn't hurt to keep on trying.
He might have forgotten that his older self and Emilie were still with him if Zoe didn't inquire about them. "This is Emilie," he said, gesturing towards the young lady, and then his gaze drifted towards his older self. How to explain it to Jamie and Zoe? "And this is...Well, this is...He's me from the future." He couldn't put it more succinctly than that.
Now that they were all together again, it would be simple enough to head back to bid a fond adieu to Emilie and himself and head back to his TARDIS but the Doctor didn't work like that; nothing was simple when one was around him. They needed to figure out what the Sea Devils were planning on doing but he'd keep mum on that for the moment because Jamie and Zoe needed to process the fact of two of him being present before them.

Jaime was rather relieved to find The Doctor so easily, "Look at tha Zoe, I told ye it would be quick. I didn't know it'd be tha quick though." Regardless he was glad to see him. The two ran up to join their friend and his new company. Were they going to be joining them? Jaime had traveled with others before Zoe as well, so he assumed so.
Zoe was quick on the jump, asking who they were meeting, and The Doctor gave an answer that Jaime couldn't quite understand, "He's, you? From the future? I don' think thas possible Doctor. Unless you mean this was you when you were younger, but even still, the face is all wrong." --------------------------
The older Doctor began feeling his face, "There's nothing wrong with my face." He looked to Emilie, "Right? My face is perfectly fine. I mean, I've had better chins, and the forehead's a little big, but my nose is perfect." Convincing himself without Emilie, he looked to Jaime and Zoe before saying, "He's telling the truth, I'm him, he's me. And all that sort of, stuff."
He didn't spoil the rest, his younger self could explain if he saw fit to. The Doctor was just pleased to see that Jaime and Zoe were fine, "Even if you don't believe him, me, it's so wonderful to see you to again." He looked on the two fondly.
Meanwhile, on the rooftops, Sea Devils were gathering, they'd filled in alleyways, intending on cutting off the outsiders.

It was so good to see the Doctor again. Well, it always was, and somehow in the excitement, Zoe realized she must have gotten distracted. For as she greeted Emilie with a 'pleased to meet you', Zoe thought she heard him say the other man was him from the future.
Before she could admit her fault and ask for clarification, Jaime spoke up. It was somewhat reassuring to hear that Jaime had heard the same as she. Perhaps the Doctor really had misspoke then. It would have been embarassing having to ask and have Jaime rub it in.
"You.. from the future?" Zoe chimed in matching disbelief. "But Doctor, that's illogical, if not impossible! Even if we were able to assume that you not only grow taller but younger over time, Jaime's right. The facial structure is completely off. Unless you mean he takes your place somehow, but that doesn't make him you.."
No, the Doctor always seemed like a singular fellow.
Although the other man was giving them a peculiar sort of look, as if he was seeing old friends from long ago. But surely that didn't mean anything.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
"They're both the Doctor," Emilie agreed cheerfully. "Just at different points in his personal timeline. Although really... I think your head was a less inflated when you were younger," Emilie's tone was slightly teasing, but mostly just warm.
"I do enjoy meeting all of you," she confided to the younger version. He was most probably more interested in his companions, but she felt the need to say it.
After all, it really was such a treat to see so many versions of him.
"I don't suppose anyone has an idea for what we should do next?"

The Doctor had never spoken to his companions about the Time Lords because he and his people weren't exactly on speaking terms with each other. They weren't too fond with him breaking their non-interference laws. But he could never stand by and watch innocent creatures die just because the Time Lords were uptight about changing history, even if most of the time the Doctor was changing history for the better.
They were, not surprisingly, not very satisfied with his answer. Why not answer their concerns now? "We, being the Time Lords, my people, have a little trick to cheat death. We regenerate. Every cell in our body changes. We become a new man." He wasn't going to add the bit about some male Time Lords regenerating into woman. He'd give them a little bit at a time to avoid them being overloaded with new information.
Emilie's question was a wise one to ask. The Doctor was about give a wise answer in return but then something out of the corner of his eye caught his eye. It was on the roof of a building in his periphery vision. He didn't need to look around to know that there were going to be plenty of other Sea Devils around taking up strategic positions to corral the strangers in. "We run!" he said, knowing that the others would soon see what he had.
He ran off in the direction they had come from, hoping the others were following close behind. He didn't get far, however, before the street he was on was cut off by two Sea Devils who appeared around the corner of a building. They were holding what appeared to be some kind of laser guns. The Doctor skidded to a halt and held up his hands. "It looks like we're in trouble," he said to his companions.

Running, The Doctor sure loved to make people run. Jaime figured by the time he got home, he'd be the best runner in all of Clan McCrimmion. He was a young man of good shape as it was, but Jaime was certainly becoming stronger and faster each day he was with The Doctor.
That was when they ran right into the face of trouble. Guns, Jaime hated these guns so much, probably just as much as The Doctor. As the group was all bunched together, Jaime pulled out his knife, "I'll give 'em what for, you just say the word Doctor." ------------------------------------------
The Eleventh Doctor sighed and looked back toward Jaime as the Sea Devils began to close in on them, "Put the knife away Jaime, it's no use. We should just let them take us in peacefully, and then we'll be able to explain our way out of this."
The Doctor slowly raised his hands and said, "We don't mean any harm, we'll go with you all peacefully, okay?" He tried to reason with their new captors.

Emilie had reacted immediately to the words 'We run', pivoting on her heel and shadowing the Doctor's exit. This younger version of him was closer to her in height, which meant his legs had not piloted him unduly far ahead of her, although he did best her in speed. This was an escape, not a race, but with the amount of escape attempts she had made with the Doctor now, little things like the fact she caught up with the younger version around nine seconds quicker somehow became what she noticed.
She did, however, notice the guns raised in their reaction in time to stutter to a stop.
Guns were never good. She wasn't much a fan of them.
The boy, Jamie, raised a knife sounding just as savage as he looked, though somehow not in a bad way.
---------------------------------------------------
Zoe had kept up with the knot of would be escapees quite easily once she noticed the numerous eyes on them much like the Doctor. She, however, was not surprised by the weapons, having seen a few armed Sea Devils before they took off. The others had been armed but the weapons had not appeared primed. Not so now, unfortunately. And if these weapons had a safety that could be latched to bluff, it certainly was not located in any place she would have guessed.
While the Doctor spoke of surrender, she raised her hands, noting the other girl having done the same.
"What do you want with us?"
There had to be some logical reason for their capture. Surely the Sea Devils would never think that they had raised the submerged city?

The Doctor wasn't the least bit surprised when Jamie pulled out his knife. It was just like the young man. Thankfully, the older him told the Scot not to do anything rash right now. That piece of advice was something this Doctor could readily agree with. "Jamie, you should listen to him..us...me." It was going to take him awhile to get used to being around another him.
The Sea Devils looked at each of them in turn before their eyes landed back on Zoe as she asked her question. "We will not harm you as long as you answer our questions," one of them said, "Follow us." They motioned with their guns for the group of captives to start moving forward.
One of the Sea Devils began to walk back towards the city, and the Doctor followed in line behind him. When the others had done the same, the second Sea Devil took a position behind the captives to cover the rear just in case one of them should dare attempt to escape.
After a moment of silence, the Doctor piped up, "Where are you taking us?" The Sea Devil in front of him, not turning around to look at the Time Lord as he spoke, said, "You will find out soon enough." The Doctor did not like the sound of that.

They'd been taking to a rather gloom cell. The walls were darkened metal and it was obvious the room was still damp from being submerged for many years. The one seat looked completely soaked, so no one was sitting. For now, they all just waited to see what was going to happen, or until one of The Doctors came up with a plan.
Jamie was having none of it, "Hey! Let us out of here!" Yelling at the door was doing no good, the Eleventh Doctor walked up and put a hand on the Highlander's shoulder, "Jamie, there's nothing we can do about it right now." He nodded toward the back, "We have to wait and see what the Sea Devils have planned for us."
That didn't please Jamie at all, he looked back to his Doctor and then sighed, smiling lightly, "He really is ye, isn't he Doctor? Even acts the same." Jamie believed The Doctor now, these two were one in the same, they had to be.

Fine print for one's safety was never reassuring, even if the requirements were clarified. Zoe had followed with the others, answering Emilie's whispered question of what their captors were in equally hushed tones.
At least they hadn't been shot at yet, that would be most discouraging. Not that the cell did much to improve the atmosphere, but with the Doctor one never stayed too still for too long.
"They're hardly going to let us out until we answer their questions, Jamie. Do be reasonable and stop that shrieking," she advised him.
For her part, she was still a little hesitant on their being two Doctors. Not because she thought the Doctor would really lie to her in such a manner, but the disparity between what was apparently reality and what made sense was quite disturbing to her.
-------------------------------
Emilie had nodded to Zoe's answer of 'Sea Devils', trailing along last in the group escorted. There were so many of them with such hostile weaponry, but she still felt like a schoolgirl on a field trip.
This was a real Earth city of a culture before humanity arose! Before mammals arose to dominance even, most probably. And that was terribly exciting.
Even if she was wishing that they could all just get out safely.
Once in the cell, their guard had secured them and left, possibly to inform a superior of some sort. Jamie didn't appear thrilled at all, but she let the Doctor, both of them, worry about talking him down.
Plopping down next to the seat, Emilie began to trail her fingers in the water.
"It would be silly to try and escape after going through so much trouble to get caught," she murmured. "We're here at the heart of the city now. The heart of the problem and the heat of danger. Isn't that rather the point?"
Her voice had turned dreamy, lost in thoughts that dotted and swirled.
"Although if you're in that much of a hurry to poke the nest, the lock might be rusted. Water usually does that, you know."

He looked over at his future self when he mentioned the name 'Sea Devils.' "So I will encounter them sometime in the future again before I become you, will I?" That was the only way future him could know who they were right now. Then again, the upcoming hims were also going to know of the Sea Devils since he was currently creating new memories for them at the moment...Time traveling could make things so confusing very quickly.
The Doctor couldn't help but smile as Jamie started to come around to realizing that the same man was present in two different bodies. "He really is me, my Dear Jamie." And the Doctor could say right now that he was proud of the man he was going to become. He was going to have a lot to look forward to.
They were going to get nothing accomplished standing around in a dank cell, nor was the Doctor too keen on waiting for their captors to come back for them. He was never one to listen to anyone in authority. It would be much easier to go poking around on their own than to hope that whoever was in authority would leak clues as to what was going on here.
Emilie's mind was apparently on the same track as she spoke up, saying exactly what the Doctor was thinking. The Doctor moved over to the front of the cell and stuck one hand out to pull on the lock. It wouldn't budge an inch. He began to pat down his jacket and pants pockets. "Now where is it?" he said to himself; 'it' being his sonic screwdriver. He had left his recorder in the TARDIS but he had to have his sonic screwdriver with him.

The older Doctor raised a finger and shushed his younger self, "Spoilers. You'll find out when the time is right." He chuckled before saying, "No need to speculate on what hasn't happened yet, is there?" He patted the young Time Lord on the shoulder and said, "Just under five hundred, so young. So much to do."
The Eleventh Doctor and Jamie looked to Emilie as she spoke up. To Jamie, he didn't know she was off, but The Doctor was starting to see that Emilie was starting to act odder and odder by the day. Shrugging it off for now, The Doctor spoke up, "Well, I'm not exactly the biggest fan of sitting around in a cold dark cell. Shall we move along? I'm sure we could get out off here."
Jamie nodded and said, "Ye must've gotten a bit wilder in yar old age Doctor, let's kick this open and go!" The older Doctor spoke up, "I'll have you know that 1036 is not old in the slightest! I'm not even near my second midlife crisis yet."

Emilie watched as the others prepared to leave, a curious expression on her face. They had only just arrived, after all.
Zoe, meanwhile, was much more focused, piping up with, "You put something in your inside pocket, Doctor, before we left the TARDIS. Is that what you're looking for?"
"I think you're much older than that, Doctor," Emilie stated cheerfully, flicking water droplets into the air. "Off to see the wizard, then?"
Zoe eyed the other woman in concern, she was still languishing about on the floor. Looking to the older Doctor, she whispered softly, "Is she all there?"
Emilie, if she heard, did not appear bothered. Someone was going to have to answer the Sea Devil's questions and distract at least part of the city or they'd only be dragged right back here. The younger Doctor and his companions were out, and if it came between her and her best friend... well, it might as well be her.
