Their History: The Creation of the Daleks
"Oh, this was meant to be! The circle of time is closing. You were there on Skaro at the very beginning of my creation!" - Davros to Sarah Jane Smith, the Crucible, the Medusa Cascade, 2008
The fearsome Daleks were created on Skaro, or D5-Gamma-Z-Alpha as it was known to the Movellans. It was the home of many species, including the humanoid Thal and Kaled races, Slythers, Dals and the Tharon. But the Daleks, the travel machines controlled by tentacled mutants on the inside, were the most evil and frightening creatures ever made. They had only one purpose in their lives, if they could be called that: to exterminate all other life in the universe.
The Thals and the Kaleds had been fighting each other in a generations-long conflict known as the Thousand Year War. In the final days of the war, in the year 1450 as it was on Earth, both sides suffered mutations caused by nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. The mutated survivors, known as Mutoes, lived in the wastelands between the domed cities of the Thals and Kaleds. It was during this time that Shan, a young Kaled scientist, authored a paper. With both Kaleds and Thals competing for resources, she called the only way out of this dilemma "the Dalek Solution". Another Kaled known as Davros presented this paper to the Kaled Council as his own.
Eventually, a now-crippled Davros became part of the Kaled Scientific Elite, and began experiments on living subjects. He even pushed through legislation enabling authority and ownership of all Kaled infants under the age of five years old, and for them to be delivered to Pediatric Facility K99, which he used as a laboratory for surgical experiments.
The first Dalek model was made when Davros transplanted the brain from Baran, a captured Thal spy, into a Mark I Travel Machine. He did not immediately show the results of his experiments to the Kaled Scientific Elite, but improved and developed the shell for the organic components of the Daleks, housing them in tank-like and armed Mark III Travel Machines. These were similar to his own life support chair. Davros had a 'nursery' of embryonic Dalek young, and as well as nurturing the physical form of his creations, Davros shaped their minds. The Daleks did not understand concepts such as pity or mercy. It did not exist in their "vocabulary banks". They had no emotions other than hatred and anger.
When Davros finally revealed his Dalek creations to the Scientific Elite, many of it's members attempted to shut the project down. It was during this time that the Fourth Doctor arrived on Skaro along with Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan, having been sent there by the Time Lords to prevent the creation of the Daleks, or at least lessen the damage they would do in the future. To prevent the Dalek project from being stopped, Davros arranged for the Thals to aim a missile at the Kaled Dome, where his people resided in the city, and therefore destroying them.
In retaliation to the attack, the Daleks were sent to exterminate the Thals. It was during this that one Dalek accidentally triggered an explosion while attempting to stop the Doctor. The explosion destroyed the room of Dalek embryoes before the Thals sealed the bunker entrance and trapped the Daleks there. Also during the attack, the Daleks turned on Davros, their leader, as they were not programmed to recognise any creature as superior to them, including him. They apparently killed him.
In the aftermath, the Doctor believed he had only held back the Dalek's progress by about a thousand years or so, and that they would return.
