Species Name: Kitran
History: The Kitrans are an advanced race that grew and developed on their own planet of Kitra-Adara. Their race thrived on their own for milliena, becoming a race that valued culture, education, science and various advancements. They weren’t always a race that was joined by symbionts. The first joining of a symbiont to a Kitran began at least 500,000 years prior to Mira’s joining with the Adoh symbiont. Most of the pre-history of how Kitrans first joined with symbionts has been lost. It’s believed that the symbionts were either native to Kitra-adara or came from another race that seeded the symbionts their and on other worlds. What is known is that when the joining of a symbiont to a Kitran host, produced a new society for Kitrans, a joined race that could live beyond their natural life span. A symbiont could carry the memories and lifetimes of various Kitrans and pass that on to others through its own long expansive lifespan. For Kitrtans being joined to a symbiont became almost as paramount as to a Gallifreyan wanting to become a Time Lord. However, a limited amount of symbionts does not guarantee that every Kitran can be joined.
Physiology:
The Symbiont, which is a most important facet in Kitran society, and culture, looks like a worm or perhaps a rather large appendix like creature. When implanted into a Kitran, the symbiont is placed within their abdomen and stomach area.
The symbionts are semi-sentient. They are intelligent but lack the cognition to understand the outside world around them. To them, the world is a nice warm nutrient rich natal pools where they grow and mature tended by unjoined Kitran monks that make sure they are nurtured and prepared for life outside of their natal pools. The symbionts communicate telepathically with each other and perhaps hold a glimpse of sentience from older symbionts, which previously held a host but no longer are able to be joined. They do not truly experience a full sentient nature until joined with a Kitran host. Since symbionts live for over 20,000 years this guarantees a long secession of hosts for a Kitran.
However, around 15,000 years to 20,000 years, the symbionts lifespan begins to degrade and they are unable to be properly hosted within a host, so they are returned to the ponds from which they were born. They sink to the lowest levels of the pool where they finally die and become absorbed into the nutrients which fed them when they were younger. There is a rumor or myth that there is an ancient symbiont that lives beneath the pools that Kitrans believe is the mother of all the symbionts born and raised. It is this symbiont that holds all knowledge of the previous kitran hosts and is considered by Kitrans religiously as the gateway to immortality as it holds all the thoughts memories of all Kitran hosts previously.
Kitrans physically very much resemble humans and very much have human attributes. The only feature that defines them from humans is the ridges on their noses. However, Kitrans unlike humans have a very hardy immune and lymphatic system. Kitrans are rarely sick and if they are a sickness generally only lasts a day at the most. This immune system makes it possible for a symbiont to be placed within a Kitran and not go through any rejection of a foreign body to their own body. Whereas any other race that has a symbiont placed within them would automatically be rejected because their body would see the symbiont as an infection or an unknown foreign body.
An average Kitran, is normally an unjoined member since competition for a symbionts is fierce. This is because there are more Kitrans then there are symbionts. A Kitran may go their whole lives without even being joined. For every Kitran that is joined, three others are rejected from the selection process. While rejected candidates may apply again for selection, re-selection is also very rare. The selection process is done by a selection committee of Joining . They look over Kitran’s academic performance, a mental evaluation, as well as a physical is preformed on each potential candidate. The commission wishes for most candidates to be academically proficient. They like candidates that have a strong academic background since they want the symbiont to go to a host that will essentially carry a strong presence for generations to come. They also want a candidate to be mentally able to hold a symbiont. If a candidate is weak mentally or has some sort of mental defect then the symbiont’s past lives will overwhelm the candidate. Plus they want to make sure most hosts are physically in good shape and are strong enough to endure the process of having a symbiont hosted within them.
For joined members of the race, once joined the host and symbiont cannot be separated. Removing a symbiont from a living host is tantamount to death to both host and symbiont. A host will eventually die in about six to eight hours. A symbiont if not placed in a new Kitran host will die in about sixteen hours.
A joined Kitran also can be telepathically linked to other joined Kitrans and to other symbionts. However, unjoined Kitrans do not have any such telepathic ability.
The planet of Kitra-Adara:
Adara was one of the ancient goddesses of the Kitrans. She’s considered the mother goddess and in the past was worshiped as the main god of all Kitrans so they named their homeworld after her. They consider themselves children of the goddess and the word Kitra and Kitran in their language basically means child or children. So the name of their planet is Children of Goddess Adara. Kitra-Adara is pretty much like Earth in terms of climate and atmosphere. With some areas found warm and tropically, others mountainous much like the Swiss or Andes mountain areas. Other places are filled with forests, woodland areas, and farmland. Much of the planet is industrialized with great cities and great capitals. However, there are a lot more caves and caverns found on Kitra-Adara. This cavern system contains the nice warm pools where the symbionts dwell. In the Kitrans primitive past, these caverns were found by primitive Kitrans who sought refuge from an ice age. Since the caverns were warm and are heated geochemically by the planet primitive Kitran society survived by living in the caves and caverns during this period of time. It’s noted that at this time Kitrans and symbionts became aware of each other as a group of people. However, it’s debated among most Kitran historians whether or not the first joining of symbiont and Kitran occurred at this point of history.
Religion/society: Modern day Kitrans are not all that religiously inclined. However, most religious beliefs Kitrans have had have centered on being joined with symbionts. Since religion focused heavily on the relationship and afterlife being connected to a symbiont, it has bled into their society in general. Despite the high rejection rate of not becoming joined. Most Kitrans drive themselves into a nervous frenzy of education, and academic pursuits just for the chance of being joined. For those who are rejected, many Kitrans attempt to settle down and live as normal of a life as they can. Others, who can’t handle the pressure of being rejected or have no desire to be caught up in such a frenzy of being joined, leave Kitra-Adara to try and find their fortunes elsewhere.
The Goddess Adara: The goddess Adara, is considered in Kitran’s primitive religious beliefs as a mother goddess who gave rise to all life on the planet including the Kitran themselves. The goddess didn’t always center so much as being a symbiontically joined goddess until later on in Kitran mythos when Kitrans first discovered the symbionts and considered them a gift and a treasure from Adara, herself. Eventually Adara, became the great mother symbiont that lives beneath the pools giving rise to new symbionts and taking on the memories of old dying symbionts which leads to the belief that Adara can offer immortality to all joined members of their race.
Rituals and Rules:
Since a symbiont can hold the knowledge of multiple hosts, a Kitran can go through basically a transference ritual that can bring one host and their memories to the forfront of a Kitran’s mind. In essence, a Kitran can transform themselves into a past host, taking on their mannerisms and various characteristics. If a Kitran is not careful their own individual personality can be lost and the dominate personally brought forward can take over. Normally this transference is only done in times of great need when the current host feels they need the guidance of a past host directly.
There is also another transference ritual that is not as dangerous which is guided by a Kitran monk, in this ceremony, which is call a guidance ritual, a Kitran’s past hosts are transferred telepathically to others, normally an unjoined Kitran or sometimes another race. This way, the joined Kitran can talk to past hosts to receive guidance and support to help them out as a joined member of their race.
There are certain rules about hosts and symbiont, a joined Kitran can never ever be romantically involved with ones past host’s wife/husband, girlfriend/boyfriend. They can be friendly towards each other but nothing can ever happen between them. If one is caught doing so, then it is automatic banishment from Kitra-Adara and both host and symbiont at the end of both their lives will eventually die with no hopes of being joined to another host. The reason for this rule is that the committee of joining believes that the symbiont needs to have new experiences and that will not happen if one becomes involved in a past relationship.
The single Earring Although not required, most Kitrans who are joined wear an earring to signify their connection to their symbiont. It's comparable to a family crest or coat of arms, that a Kitran will wear to signify that they are symbolically a different person now that they are joined with a symbiont and their future and past is now linked to the symbiont.
