Leela might have been on Gallifrey for quite a while, now, but that didn't mean that she was completely comfortable here, yet. In fact, she wasn't sure that she ever would be, especially when Andred wasn't around. The way that he looked at her, made all her concerns vanish, like sunlight washing away shadows.
When he was gone, though, it all came rushing back. It didn't feel natural here, cut off from the the earth underfoot, and the feeling of wind on her skin, or the feeling of moister in the air. Here, there were only plain walls. No sunlight to wake her, and warm her, no stars to guide her passage through the night.
It wasn't right for people to live like this, shut up in a sterile box.
She turned heads as she paced down the length of yet another unchanging, identical white corridor. She was still comfortable in her skins, even though the sight of that, alone seemed enough to make most Gallifreyans wary around her. She wasn't going to change, and hide herself away for the sake of others, though. Not when Andred loved her as she was.
She had tried on the robes a couple of times, anyway, but that just made her feel even more trapped and restricted than just being inside this bright, clean cage did.
Rounding a corner, she stepped sharply to the side to avoid crashing into a Gallifreyan who was dressed in purple robes, as she headed towards the President's office. The man slowed down a little, studying here while trying to seem not to, just like almost everyone did these days, and Leela held her head a little higher, and walked a little faster, with a little more authority.
Body language had always been one of her best tools, and it still was.
Finally, she came to the final stretch of corridor, and as she approached the President's office, the two guards outside moved to attention.
"What business have you with the Lady President Romanadvoratrelundar, Leelandredloomsagwinaechegesima?"
It still sounded strange to her, to hear herself called by a Gallifreyan name.
"I want to talk to her, about Andred."
The second guard had a hand resting on a staser handle, something that Leela noticed straight away. "Do you have an appointment?"
"Surely I do not need an appointment? It is only for a few minutes."
"Of course you need an appointment. The Lady President is a very busy woman."
Leela's hand came to rest on her hip, unconsciously hovering near her knife. "Please, will you just ask if she has a few minutes?"
The guards looked at one another, and shared a sigh. Leela already had a reputation for tenacity, after all. It would be far faster to go through, and let the alien woman hear Romana's refusal, than to spend the next few hours arguing with her about it.
"You wait here, and I'll see if she wishes to receive visitors."
Of course, the moment that the door to the President's office was opened, Leela was pushing her way in, anyway. "Please, Lady President. I must talk to you."

"Leela!" the Lady President warmly exclaimed, for it was such a treat to see another of the Doctor's former companions -- especially since she didn't happen to be on today's [rather boring] agenda. "Come in, come in!" she welcomed the other woman, ignoring the disapproving looks from the guards that hovered ever constantly outside her door.
"You look well. How has Gallifrey been treating you?" Romana politely inquired, as she led Leela into her office, where a tea tray sat parked atop her desk.
Leela was one of the few -- if not the only -- person on Gallifrey who wasn't native to the planet. She was an anomaly, which tended to make the Council (among others) wary of the warrior woman. Romana, on the other hand, was delighted to have her around -- and it was high time they got together for tea and a chat.

Leela followed Romana further into her office, one hand on the handle of her knife, ever wary for a trap to spring closed around her, even here in the brightly lit halls and corridors of Gallifrey. Experience had taught her never to take surface appearances to be everything that there was, and that it took more than a bright light to keep some evils at bay.
Leela reached out, to take one biscuit in either hand as she caught sight of that tray, not even thinking that it might have been better for her to wait, or ask permission. She took a bite out of each biscuit, before smiling at Romana.
"You look very well as well, Lady President." She paused for a beat, then explained. "Andred was helping me to improve my manners, before he left on his new job. And Gallifrey is... interesting. But I am bored. I have nothing to do, and no idea of when Andred will be returning. I miss him."
Glancing at both of her biscuits, she popped what was left of both of them into her mouth, and chewed as she waited for Romana to reply.

Romana gave a tiny chuckle when she saw Leela snap-up the cookies, one in each hand, and then proceed to take a bite out of each. She was marking her territory, she supposed, in her own way. Most Time Lords would sneer at such behaviour... But, Romana knew that there were all kinds of people in this universe, and they all had their own way of doing things -- their own rules as to what is acceptable, and what is not.
"You look very well as well, Lady President." She paused for a beat, then explained. "Andred was helping me to improve my manners, before he left on his new job. And Gallifrey is... interesting. But I am bored. I have nothing to do, and no idea of when Andred will be returning. I miss him."
"Excellent idea, manners..." Romana said. "Well done, Andred. Manners and etiquette can be very serious business. Some cultures cannot abide a breach in propriety, while others seem to be completely lax about how to conduct oneself," she explained to the other woman, as she stuffed the remains of the cookies down her gullet.
"I wouldn't mind picking up, perhaps, where Andred left off...?" the Lady President offered, happy to help expand another's horizons. There was much she could teach Leela.
"And, I might just have a remedy for your boredom," Romana added.
It was a perfect idea! Why hadn't she thought of it sooner?
She could offer Leela a job -- an actual position within Gallifreyan society. And what, praytell, would the savage, ignorant woman be capable of doing, you wonder?
Well, wouldn't she just make the perfect bodyguard and companion to the Lady President?
Don't you think?
Romana sure did...
She smiled at Leela, while her eyes glittered with promise.

Leela studied Romana closely, the look in her eyes one of close concentration, as though the Time Lady before her were something that she hadn't quite figured out, yet. An enigma, a mark on the path, showing yet another way through the forest. With a slight tilt of her head, she caught the gaze of the other woman with an expression that wasn't quite a challenge, but was certainly not far off of it. "Do not expect me to read your books, know your big words, and speak your language as you do, Lady Romana. In my tribe, in our village, the words that we spoke were simple and to the point, and our writing was pictures in the dust, compared to yours. You have letters and words that are twisted into art, and every part of the picture speaks of a meaning. When and where, and how things happened, and which of your dimensions it happened in, and it hurts my head to try and work it out." At that, Leela crossed her arms, and still didn't drop her gaze. To many others, it would certainly be rude, but from her, it showed that she was paying attention. That she hadn't walked off, meant that she would stay and hear out whatever Romana had to say.
"You could try, if you wished so. I imagine that it would not be thought of as a good use of your time, by your people, though. Surely, ruling over the affairs of all of time and space would not leave you with much time left in your days." At that, Leela's ears perked up. "Do you wish me to hunt someone, or something for you? That would be a very interesting thing, and I am as good with a bow and arrow, as I am with my knife. I can kill without leaving a mark, and slip away into the shadows, as though I was never there."
A tiny frown crossed her face, as she wondered what to say next, then she grinned, wild and fircely proud as she though of it. "I will not even tell anyone that I was here, if that is what you wish. I am good at keeping a secret."

When and where, and how things happened, and which of your dimensions it happened in, and it hurts my head to try and work it out." Being on Gallifrey and surrounded by [mostly] exclusively Time Lords all of the time -- all of which had quite the education, as one would imagine -- it was easy to forget that other people, other races, other species, were not the same as Time Lords. Books and big words weren't for everyone, as Leela had just pointed out. "I wouldn't mind picking up, perhaps, where Andred left off...?" the Lady President offered, happy to help expand another's horizons. There was much she could teach Leela. At that, Leela crossed her arms, and still didn't drop her gaze. To many others, it would certainly be rude, but from her, it showed that she was paying attention. That she hadn't walked off, meant that she would stay and hear out whatever Romana had to say.
"You could try, if you wished so. I imagine that it would not be thought of as a good use of your time, by your people, though. Surely, ruling over the affairs of all of time and space would not leave you with much time left in your days." Leela seemed a bit... surly about the idea. Romana should just drop it. What did this woman mean to her? Romana owed her nothing, and vice-versa. Why should the Lady President take an interest in the savage foreigner? Well... Why not? Leela came with an excellent recommendation from the Doctor, and the well-trusted Andred loved her. And, if she was going to truly become a part of their society, Leela would need all the help she could get. That, and... maybe Romana was growing a bit bored, too. "And, I might just have a remedy for your boredom," Romana added. "Do you wish me to hunt someone, or something for you? That would be a very interesting thing, and I am as good with a bow and arrow, as I am with my knife. I can kill without leaving a mark, and slip away into the shadows, as though I was never there."
A tiny frown crossed her face, as she wondered what to say next, then she grinned, wild and fiercely proud as she though of it. "I will not even tell anyone that I was here, if that is what you wish. I am good at keeping a secret." "Oh, no," Romana assured Leela. "Nothing like that; however, should the need ever arise for a top-notch assassin, I'll know just who to call on." The Lady President offered a kind smile, as if the offer to hunt down a target were as commonplace as ordering pizza on Earth. She didn't want Leela to feel any more alienated than she already must. "And there's no need to keep your visit a secret; though, I do highly value the ability to keep secrets." The Office of the President involved quite a number of secrets, in fact. And, should the two women spend any sort of regular amount of time together, Leela would be likely to encounter some of these secrets, too -- and her life may very well one day depend on keeping her mouth shut and appearing to be ignorant. However, looking back on Leela's offer to maim or kill... It might be an awfully keen idea to, perhaps, offer the young woman a job as her bodyguard. Romana was a Thinker, not a Fighter, and politics being what they were -- what they always had been and would always be -- it may be the best idea Romana'd had in... at least a several minutes. "Leela, I'm just going to be frank with you. I could really use a bodyguard -- someone to help keep me safe from any would-be assassins, and out of trouble in general. Might you be up to the task?"If Leela had been able to keep the Doctor safe, surely watching over a mere politician should be a piece of cake for the warrior! Leela
