Thanks to getting a Nook for Christmas, I've been reading the Doctor Who novels in order, beginning with An Unearthly Child. So here's some things I've learned about the Time Lords from those novels:
- They are stronger for their size than a comparable human would be. (The Daleks)
- Alcohol only makes them drunk if they want it to. (The Sorcerer's Apprentice)
- Susan, as a young Time Lord, needed to sleep as much as two hours a day. She looked forward to getting older, so she wouldn't need it so much. (The Sorcerer's Apprentice)
- Time Lord body temperature is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. (The Reign of Terror)
- According to the original draft of An Unearthly Child, Susan's real name is "Findooclare". The Doctor also had these lines: "Everywhere [the enemy] he listens. He searches for you, Findooclare... for you. His victory is not complete until he destroys you." Also "Findooclare would rule! Findooclare would be Queen in a world greater than any your minds could dream of. But her people are enslaved by the Paladin hordes." Ian calls him mad over this, and the Doctor responds "You would insult a Lord of the House of Doclare?" Oh, and finally, Susan says "It's a name he has for me. I was a baby when the Paladins attacked our world and he saved me. We got away in this machine... It was the first our people made." (The Doctors Who's Who.)
- The limit of 12 regenerations was not a thing, early on. Several of the novelizations of the adventures of the First Doctor allude to his previous Incarnations.
- Names run the risk of trapping you in a historical role. That's why the Doctor doesn't use one, and presumably it's why other Time Lords that leave Gallifrey tend not to use them either. (The Myth Makers)
- The Master didn't invent the idea of a "laser screwdriver" in The Sound of Drums. The Meddling Monk used a "laser pen" to seal the lock of the Doctor's TARDIS. (The Mutation of Time.)
- Regeneration hurts. A lot. Particularly if you've been resisting Regeneration. Plan to spend some time figuring out whether or not you've got all the senses you had in your old body, and whether or not you've got new senses. (Power of the Daleks)
