Prologue...Silence reigned. It was an empty world. Abandoned. Thousands of years before, the planet had been shaped into an ecumenopolis. A single vast library that filled an entire world. A temple dedicated to knowledge, to wisdom, to understanding. Now it stood deserted, a shrine to the oldest of man's fears. The fear of the dark.
A grinding roar began to build in intensity in one of the naves of the great Library. It emanated from nowhere, rebounding in increasing echoes from the book-filled shelves and the intricate marble of the floors and ceiling, only to die away again. For a moment, it appeared that nothing had changed. Then a door opened in the side of one of the shelves and a man in a grey suit stepped out, the golden tip of his ivory cane clicking on the stone floor. "The Library!" he said, gesturing with his free hand. "The single greatest human-made repository of knowledge in all of Mutter's Spiral." With a flourish, he turned and walked backwards, addressing the two women that emerged from the door behind him. "Not a patch on the Great Library of Gallifrey, or the Celaeno Archives, but that's hardly a fair comparison. Those libraries are hundreds of millions of years old, and this is barely as old as I am.' The Meddler stopped walking backwards and leaned with both hands on his cane. "It also happens to be the last known location of Professor River Song. Which is, of course, why we're here..." His voice trailed away, and he looked around. "Odd. I thought it would be busier here." Unnoticed, the darkness - long in hibernation - began to stir.

Amy followed the Meddler and his lovely wife Sisi - two of her newest friends - out of the TARDIS and into... a giant library. THE Library, apparently.
"Wait... Yuir tellin' me that this whole planet is The Library?" Amy asked as she looked about the general area in wonder. It sort of made her wish that she enjoyed reading more... The place was beautifully decorated - nicer than most any Library that Amy had been to on Earth. And, it was so clean... and so quiet...
Amy wasn't really sure why they had come here, but she knew it had to do with finding someone named Professor River Song - whoever she was...
"It also happens to be the last known location of Professor River Song. Which is, of course, why we're here..."
Amy nodded, but... she didn't know who this lady was, or how come they needed her help so badly.
"Odd. I thought it would be busier here."
Amy hadn't paid the stillness any mind. It was a Library, after all, and people were supposed to be quiet. But then again, she had never seen this place in its heyday - in fact, Amy was still trying to wrap her mind around the fact that this Library took up an entire planet. Who knew there could be so many books?!?!
"Don't ye think this professor might git a bit annoyed that we want ta take her away from here?" Amy asked. "I mean... I'm assumin' she's here to write some sort of Thesis, or somethin' - why else would anyone come ta a planet that's entirely filled up with books on every subject?" the ginger mused. "Right?" she asked her friends.
"So... D'ye ken how ta find Professor Song in this place? It's so big! Does she have an office, or somethin'?" Amy asked, completely and utterly clueless that the woman they were seeking would one day wind up to be Amy's daughter.

Her face had seemed worried, but exited at the same time. Worried, that they were threading the fine lines of time laws by taking Amy along, and exited that she would finally get to meet this Professor Song she had seen coming back and forth through history documents. The big prehistoric sign with "HELLO SWEETIE" had kept her grinning her head off for a week. The woman had style.
She watched from the TARDIS door as her husband once again made a flourish. He still lived to impress sometimes, she thought with a grin. And Amelia was taking in the sights ike she had ended up in a free candy store.
She too, still did that sometimes. But once one had seen the end of the universe, everything came a slight bit wry in comparison. Still, it did not keep her from enjoying the beauty while it was still alive.
The grin disappeared from her face though, the moment she stepped out of the TARDIS.
She stilled as a sickening sinking feeling downed on her. A feeling of being watched by something dark and disturbing. She instantly stilled, her eyes having gone wide and glowing as she immediately expanded her mental radar to see what was going on.
She shouldn't have.
She brought her hand to her lips from spilling out the contents of her stomach as she took in what surrounded them, it instantly causing her stomach to do flipflops, the bad kind. Sweat started to bead on her brow.
The conversation between Amelia and Robin went completely over her head, she was too busy taking in the surroundings.
And how it stirred and was looking at them. But what frightened her most, as her eyes darted through the room they were in, she couldn't see anything. This while her senses were clearly telling her something was there, which she did not understand. She was a Sidhe, she could see through glamour so it just didn't make sense.
She knew one thing for sure, that she didn't like it. At all.
"Odd. I thought it would be busier here." She heard Robin say.
"Don't ye think this professor might git a bit annoyed that we want ta take her away from here? I mean... I'm assumin' she's here to write some sort of Thesis, or somethin' - why else would anyone come ta a planet that's entirely filled up with books on every subject? Right?"
The silence remained for a moment, Sisi had been oddly quiet till that moment, her back turned to the two of them.
"We're not alone Robin." Her voice silent through the echoing library, something in her tone spoke volumes that she wasn't cheerful. No it was strictly composed, almost millitary. Last time she had spoken like that was during the fight with Xandavier, her father.
Her face tuned to the two, her skin ashen and her eyes wide and glowing. Something was clearly amiss.
"I can feel it.. but I can't see it." She said, her composure wavering towards frantic.
Her eyes connected to Amelia, this would tear her apart if it got it's hand on her.
What had they done?

"Don't ye think this professor might git a bit annoyed that we want ta take her away from here?" Amy asked. "I mean... I'm assumin' she's here to write some sort of Thesis, or somethin' - why else would anyone come ta a planet that's entirely filled up with books on every subject?" the ginger mused. "Right?" she asked her friends.
The Meddler grinned. "I don't think she will be, based on what history tells us about her." He looked around curiously. "All the records I could find about her - and she's a time traveler, so it's hard going - indicate that she dies here."
He paused, examining the titles on the closest shelf. "Having died a few times myself, I think I can say from experience that she won't mind if we take her away from that."
"So... D'ye ken how ta find Professor Song in this place? It's so big! Does she have an office, or somethin'?" Amy asked.
"Not really. I'd planned to ask the Library staff to page her." He looked around at the empty chamber. "That seems like a bad plan, now."
"We're not alone Robin."
Something in the tone of the Dreamweaver's voice caught his attention. "We shouldn't be..." he started to say, but his voice trailed away as he caught sight of her ashen skin and glowing eyes.
"What is it?" he asked, concerned. "What's wrong?"
"I can feel it.. but I can't see it."
The Meddler considered their options. "We have to get Professor Song," he said, slowly. "We need her, to improve our odds against Gallifrey. And history tells us she's due to arrive here within the next half-hour or so." A pause. "So let's get her, and get out of here, without dawdling."
His faintly luminous eyes flickered over the room, and then he pointed. "Over there. One of the Catalog Kiosks. We can have the Library scan for her location and, if she's not here, we can move the TARDIS to when she will be here." With that, he turned and strode towards the far end of the chamber.

"What is it?" he asked, concerned. "What's wrong?"
"I can feel it.. but I can't see it."Amy turned to look at Sisi and was astonished to find the woman's eyes glowing, and her skin ashen. A look of concern shone on the ginger's face, and she asked, "Wot is it? Wot d'ye feel?" Without moving, Amy stole a few glances through her peripheral vision, but she didn't see anything, either. No one was there... So, what was making Sisi look so ill? What was making her eyes glow? What the heck was going on here...? "We have to get Professor Song," he said, slowly. "We need her, to improve our odds against Gallifrey. And history tells us she's due to arrive here within the next half-hour or so." A pause. "So let's get her, and get out of here, without dawdling."Amy nodded, agreeing with the Meddler's plan. Now, Amy couldn't feel exactly what Sisi felt, but... she felt something. Something that gave her the 'creepy crawlies'... Amy did not want to be here any longer than necessary, and she was all in favor of not dawdling. His faintly luminous eyes flickered over the room, and then he pointed. "Over there. One of the Catalog Kiosks. We can have the Library scan for her location and, if she's not here, we can move the TARDIS to when she will be here." With that, he turned and strode towards the far end of the chamber. Amy's green eyes followed to where the Meddler pointed, and she saw a rather curious, almost statue-like structure up ahead, though it was a bit too far away to make out any details. Beside it was a desk, like where one would go for information, or to check out a book... "D'ye think it'll work if there's not a librarian to run it?" Amy asked the Meddler of the kiosk. Of course, she thought the kiosk must be some sort of computer on the desk... not the statue-thing beside it.
OOC: I'm assuming that the info kiosks are the same things as the "nodes" from Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead... Is that right? (I used Google search, and they seem to be one and the same). If I'm wrong, I don't mind editing my post:

Sisi had gotten used to the Meddler's more safer side for as long as they had gotten children. But now she was confronted again by the man she had gotten to know all those years ago, a man whom she often had to act as a cause of reason. Thus, her eyes widened slightly at his almost dismissive way of pressing on that they had to get professor River Song.
"We need her, to improve our odds against Gallifrey. And history tells us she's due to arrive here within the next half-hour or so." A pause. "So let's get her, and get out of here, without dawdling."
"Over there. One of the Catalog Kiosks. We can have the Library scan for her location and, if she's not here, we can move the TARDIS to when she will be here." With that, he turned and strode towards the far end of the chamber.
She shook her head, sighing aggrivatedly and crossed the distance between them in a few quick strikes. She grabbed his hand, her palm pressing against the silvery web of the telepathic circuitry. Through it flowed her senses, sending him what she was feeling like a telepathic mirror, the impending darkness that promised no future for who it touched. The impending hunger just waiting for you to make one wrong move.
"Remember Robin Goodfellow," She hissed softy for only his ears to hear, and she realised for the first time that she did not even know his name. Only his titles. "That there are others who depend on you these days," She referred to their children, their faces flashing happily across their minds as a bitter reminder over the impending feeling of doom around them "and that it was your idea to bring Amelia along. This.. it is.. it's hiding in the darkness." Her voice wavered at the end, it was clear she was distraught. Where the Meddler was quite numb when it came to outside influences, save for his personally altered hand, his wife was quite the opposite. Sidhe were very close to outside influences, too close some would say, like in these instances.
In the meantime, Amy had strode to what seemed like a central desk.
"D'ye think it'll work if there's not a librarian to run it?"
Sisi ignored her question though and stared at the statue her mouth slightly agape, her hand slipping from the Meddler's.
A statue that had a real face on it.
What was this place? It seemed like something straight out of her worst nightmares.

The Meddler stumbled a little when the Dreamweaver took his hand. Even muted by the psionic circuits, the sense of ancient hunger all around them caught him off guard.
"Remember Robin Goodfellow," She hissed softy for only his ears to hear, "that there are others who depend on you these days, and that it was your idea to bring Amelia along. This.. it is.. it's hiding in the darkness."
Her reminder that they had children to worry about - that he couldn't just race off after every fancy that took him - was like an ice-cold splash of reality. "I... I know," he whispered back, squeezing her hand. "And I'm not trying to be reckless." He closed his eyes. "But we need help. And Alec... the Doctor... even the Master... none of them are responding." He opened his eyes, face serious. "We need her, Dreamweaver. Because I will not allow our children to grow up with Gallifrey's boot on their necks."
He looked away, faintly luminous eyes staring into the shadows cast by the shelves. "Ancient hunger," he said, mostly to himself, "hiding in the darkness. That reminds me of something..." His vision became a little unfocused as he sorted through his memories.
"D'ye think it'll work if there's not a librarian to run it?"
"What?" The Meddler's train of thought was broken by Amy's question.
Ancient hunger, hiding in the darkness...
He felt the Dreamweaver's shock for just an instant as her hand slipped from his, and he looked around quickly to see what could be causing it. "What's wrong, love?"
One of the Library nodes stood before them, a flesh mask of an attractive young asian woman in place. "I am Courtesy Node 2273/vermillion," it said in a pleasant soprano, with just enough of an accent to make the voice interesting. "Please enjoy the Library and respect the personal access codes of all your fellow readers regardless of hygiene or taboo," it said.
Nothing abnormal there.
"It'll work just fine without a Librarian," he assured Amy. "The nodes have a fairly sophisticated weak artificial intelligence. All you have to do is talk to it."

Amy hadn't been paying all that much attention to the sculpture-thing - she was more focused on the desk, since Amy hadn't expected the 'artwork' to be anything more than, well... Art. When a new, fourth voice spoke, Amy nearly jumped out of her skin and turned and looked up at the 'sculpture'. Her eyes went wide with disbelief when she saw that it had a face - an honest to goodness humanoid face - and that it was speaking to them.
"I am Courtesy Node 2273/vermillion. Please enjoy the Library and respect the personal access codes of all your fellow readers, regardless of hygiene or taboo."
"Wot is that?" Amy asked, horrified at the face trapped in the node. "Why's it have a face?" she asked as she looked over to the Meddler and Sisi.
The node was seriously creeping her out.
"It'll work just fine without a Librarian," he assured Amy. "The nodes have a fairly sophisticated weak artificial intelligence. All you have to do is talk to it."
"Umm... Okay..." Amy said hesitantly as she turned back to face the Courtesy Node. She couldn't recall the number it had used to identify itself, but Amy did remember that she had also called herself 'Vermillion', which Amy assumed must be her name - so, she was going to use it as such.
"Uhh, Vermillion? We're looking for Professor River Song - can you help us locate her? Is she here in the Library?" Amy asked, feeling very, very weird talking to the face in the node.

She held his hand a little tighter as he gently squeezed back, seeing how his mind stilled for a moment.
"I... I know, and I'm not trying to be reckless." He closed his eyes. "But we need help. And Alec... the Doctor... even the Master... none of them are responding." He opened his eyes, face serious. "We need her, Dreamweaver. Because I will not allow our children to grow up with Gallifrey's boot on their necks."
She just nodded at him, firmly. Really, there was nothing more to say and with a last squeeze she released his hand and made her way towards where Amelia was standing.
"D'ye think it'll work if there's not a librarian to run it?"
"What?" The Meddler's train of thought was broken by Amy's question.
Sisi ignored her question though and stared at the statue her mouth slightly agape, her hand slipping from the Meddler's.
A statue that had a real face on it.
What was this place? It seemed like something straight out of her worst nightmares.
"What's wrong, love?"
Sisi turned around, her face somewhat distraught as she thumbed back to the node. She blinked and hissed "That things got a real face on it! That's just.. that's not right! Right?" Just then, she whirled around again as the thing actually spoke this time. She staggered slightly at the sight of it.
"Trust me, I'm as weirded out by this as you are, Amelia." She too looked back towards the Meddler, holding her hands out in a questioning fashion.
"It'll work just fine without a Librarian," he assured Amy. "The nodes have a fairly sophisticated weak artificial intelligence. All you have to do is talk to it."
"Still, it's got a face. Is that even real or what?" She got closer to it, sniffing the air carefully. It didn't smell human..
"Uhh, Vermillion? We're looking for Professor River Song - can you help us locate her? Is she here in the Library?"
She looked over at Amy, then back to the node. Amelia looked about as weirded out by this like.

The Meddler blinked, clearly puzzled by their reactions. "Of course it's got a real face. The node chose one from the flesh banks that it thought you would like." A pause. "Well, not thought - it's not actually artificially sentient. But 'chose one from the flesh banks that its algorithms calculated you would find asthetically appealing with a high probability of confidence' is awkward." He pointed at the face with his cane. "And it has a face so you can talk to it. Humanity appreciates a human touch to its technology, after all."
He smiled in a way that he hoped was reassuring. "But it'll work just fine without a Librarian. the nodes aren't sentient, but they have a fairly sophisticated weak artifical intelligence. All you have to do is talk to it."
"Still, it's got a face. Is that even real or what?" She got closer to it, sniffing the air carefully.
The Meddler massaged the bridge of his nose, feeling faintly glad that nobody else was around. "Of course..." he started to say.
"This flesh aspect was donated by Marissa ChenDonald on the occasion of her death," the node interrupted in its pleasantly-accented soprano.
"There," the Meddler said, gesturing. "Perfectly real."
"Uhh, Vermillion? We're looking for Professor River Song - can you help us locate her? Is she here in the Library?" Amy asked, feeling very, very weird talking to the face in the node.
The node's eyes closed for a moment, then reopened. "There are a total of five humanoid life forms in the Library. I can page Doctor Song, and ask her to contact the router."
The node waited a second, then spoke again. "Additional. There follows a brief message from the head librarian for your urgent attention. It has been edited for tone and content by Felman Lux Automated Decency Filter. Message follows. "Run. For God's sake, run. No way is safe. The Library has sealed itself, we can't... Oh, they're here. Arg. Slarg. Snick." Message ends. Please switch off your mobile comm units for the comfort of other readers."

"There are a total of five humanoid life forms in the Library. I can page Doctor Song, and ask her to contact the router."
Amy gave the face a smile - a slightly uncomfortable, yet still polite smile - and said, "Thanks..." She trailed off, wondering who the other two humanoid lifeforms were. Obviously, there was the three of them right here, and then two more... One was probably this Professor Song woman, but Amy hadn't the foggiest who the fifth might be.
Amy also didn't quite understand what the face meant when it said that it would have Prof. Song contact the router; however, there was a lot of tech-speak that Amy didn't understand. She just preferred to let others think that she did, because she really didn't want anyone to think she was stupid.
If she really needed (or wanted) to know what something meant, Amy would ask. But right now, it didn't seem to be a big deal.
Router-schmouter.
Maybe The Library's PA system was connected via high speed internet? Who knew?
Amy turned back to her friends and asked, "So... Wot if she's on tha complete other side 'a tha world? Is there some sort 'a high tech transport system for people ta use, so that it doesn't take a lifetime to walk around this place?"

"I know humanity likes a human touch, but by Amy's reaction I think they kind of over did it a bit.." She swallowed and stared at the statue, deciding to keep quiet as it went on. Maybe it had something important to say.
"This flesh aspect was donated by Marissa ChenDonald on the occasion of her death," the node interrupted in its pleasantly-accented soprano.
"There," the Meddler said, gesturing. "Perfectly real."
"It's astounding how you sometimes completely miss the point, darling." She dead panned, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"Splendid, the sooner we get out of here the better!" But she was interrupted by the node again.
Sisi paled, considerably as she staggered back. Her head snapped to the Meddler, her eyes pleading. She knew that coming here was a bad idea. But yet, she knew they needed this professor Song and so she squared her shoulders.
"Robin, this better be damn well worth it."
"So... Wot if she's on tha complete other side 'a tha world? Is there some sort 'a high tech transport system for people ta use, so that it doesn't take a lifetime to walk around this place?"
Her head turned to Amy, then to the Meddler again.
"She has a fair point. No matter what they say about Fae, I actually can't fly you know."

"It's astounding how you sometimes completely miss the point, darling." She dead panned, pinching the bridge of her nose.
The Meddler looked confused. "She asked if it was real, and now we have confirmation. I'm not sure what I'm missing..."
The Node announced there were five humanoids in the Library and offered to page Doctor Song.
"So... Wot if she's on tha complete other side 'a tha world?" Amy asked. "Is there some sort 'a high tech transport system for people ta use, so that it doesn't take a lifetime to walk around this place?"
Sisi's head turned to Amy, then to the Meddler again. "She has a fair point. No matter what they say about Fae, I actually can't fly you know."
"This is the 51st century, anno domini reckoning," the Meddler laughed. "We can just use the Conveyances for short trips, and the transmat network if we need to go more than a few miles."
He threw an affectionate arm around his wife's shoulders, and a comradely one around Amy's. "Look, I know it's a little odd around here. What with the thing in the darkness and the fact that there's only five humanoids on the whole planet and all..." He paused, considering his words. "All right, that does sound rather menacing, put that way. But we're only going to be here a half hour or so, and then it's Professor Song on the TARDIS and the TARDIS heading somewhere that isn't creepy and spooky. How bad can things get in half an hour?"
"Additional," announced the Node. "There follows a brief message from the head librarian for your urgent attention. It has been edited for tone and content by Felman Lux Automated Decency Filter. Message follows. 'Run. For God's sake, run. No way is safe. The Library has sealed itself, we can't... Oh, they're here. Arg. Slarg. Snick.' Message ends. Please switch off your mobile comm units for the comfort of other readers."
"I'm going to learn to stop saying things like that, one of these days," the Meddler deadpanned.
Sisi paled, considerably as she staggered back. Her head snapped to the Meddler, her eyes pleading. She knew that coming here was a bad idea. But yet, she knew they needed this professor Song and so she squared her shoulders.
"Robin, this better be damn well worth it."
He drew a slow, deep breath and released it. "It will be," he said, drawing on centuries of confidence. "It will be." Then he brought the inside of his wrist to his mouth, and spoke into the communications disk he'd stuck there. "Tonks? Make certain that the twins do not leave the TARDIS."
"One additional message," announced the Node. "This message carries a Felman Lux coherency warning of 5, 0, 11..."
"Whatever," snapped the Meddler, looking up. "Play it."
"Message follows. 'Count the shadows. For God's sake, remember... if you want to live, count the shadows.' Message ends."
He blinked. Twice. and "Tonks! Exterior lights! Full power! NOW!"
The bookcase that was the TARDIS shimmered, and a blinding silvery radiance emanated from it. The light was bright enough to be an almost physical presence, blasting every shadow in the room out of existence.
Almost every shadow. A patch of darkness near the Node exploded into thousands of motes of night, making a barely audible supersonic keening as it fled.
"Eilethya defend her Nieces and Nephews," breathed the Meddler, eyes wide with shock. "The Vashta Nerada."

"I'm going to learn to stop saying things like that, one of these days," the Meddler deadpanned
"You're over a thousand years old, love. If you still do it I don't think you'll start changing, ever." She deadpanned too, his arm still about her shoulders. She gave him a sidelong look up at his face, giving the 'are you happy now' look.
But the message did make her sick, she could feel the fear and pain in those words, she staggered, doubling over for a moment, swallowing heavily to keep bile from rising up to her throat. She knew that coming here was a bad idea. But yet, she knew they needed this professor Song and so she squared her shoulders.
"Robin, this better be damn well worth it."
Robin seemed to need a moment to compose himself before continuing. "It will be," he said, drawing on centuries of confidence. "It will be." Then he brought the inside of his wrist to his mouth, and spoke into the communications disk he'd stuck there. "Tonks? Make certain that the twins do not leave the TARDIS."
"I already told him that." She managed to add before the node spoke up again.
"Whatever," snapped the Meddler, looking up. "Play it."
"Message follows. 'Count the shadows. For God's sake, remember... if you want to live, count the shadows.' Message ends."
He blinked. Twice. and "Tonks! Exterior lights! Full power! NOW!"
Her jaw tightened as she felt her husband tense next to her. It took a bloody statue with a face for him to start taking her words seriously now it seemed. Her hands clenched, her nails drawing little hand moons in her palms.
She shielded her eyes at the sudden glaring light of the bookcase close to them, the TARDIS.
Almost every shadow. A patch of darkness near the Node exploded into thousands of motes of night, making a barely audible supersonic keening as it fled.
"Eilethya defend her Nieces and Nephews," breathed the Meddler, eyes wide with shock. "The Vashta Nerada."
She wasn't as surprised as he was, not really. She didn't need to know the name of what horror happened here to feel what it could do.
"We should bring Miss Pond back to the TARDIS. And next time, love," She looked up, her eyes were burning, burning with anger this time, towards him.
"I'd wish you'd take my warnings more seriously. I hate saying I already told you so. It takes the words of a statue with a blethering face for you to finally respond accordingly." She snapped.
She sighed aggravated, shook her head and walked on, closer to the node.
"The location of Professor Song. And how to contact her, if you please. Now."

Amy hadn't a clue who the Vashta Nerada were. She would have a couple of run-ins with them in her future, but until then, this species was completely new to the ginge from Leadworth. She noted her friends' fear, but she couldn't truly understand why this species was so frightening.
"We should bring Miss Pond back to the TARDIS. And next time, love, I'd wish you'd take my warnings more seriously. I hate saying I already told you so. It takes the words of a statue with a blethering face for you to finally respond accordingly."
Not understanding the direness of their situation, Amy did not wish to return to the TARDIS. She didn't want to be treated any differently just because she was a Human (which is what she assumed was going on), and Amy was confidant that she could hold her own.
"Wait a minute - I dinne want ta be shoved back in tha TARDIS like a helpless child," Amy said, folding her arms over her chest in a defiant pose. "I can manage, just tha same as ye two," she vowed, quite bull-headedly. Amy didn't wish to argue; instead, she simply wanted to keep going on this mission and not give up just because her friends were worried about her. "I'll be fine!" she assured them. "Though... I've never heard o' tha Vashta Nerada before - who are they? Why are they so scary? An', what's up with counting yuir shadows?" she asked, looking quite confused and hoping that someone would explain things to her.
"The location of Professor Song. And how to contact her, if you please. Now," Sisi demanded of the creepy node.
